What to watch for on this route

In the planner, TripCaptain highlights forecast weather risks between Billings, MT and Bozeman, MT and summarizes the analysis with a Hazard Score™ from 0 to 100. A higher score indicates lower forecast risk, without guaranteeing road conditions.

  • Black ice on the pass grades: Black ice forms on the shaded curves and bridge decks of Bozeman Pass, most often near dawn after a cold, clear night. It's hardest to see on the climb and descent, where the road stays frozen long after the valleys have thawed.
  • Sudden snow squalls: Fast-moving squalls off the Rocky Mountain Front can bury the summit in minutes and drop visibility below ¼ mile (400 m). Billings can look clear while the pass is already closed.
  • Crosswinds over the summit: Open stretches near the 5,712 ft (1,741 m) summit funnel strong crosswinds that shove high-profile vehicles, trailers, and RVs. Gusts over 55 mph (90 km/h) are common ahead of a front.
  • Blowing snow and whiteout: Wind lifts loose snow across the roadway and can erase the lane lines into a full whiteout, even when it isn't actively snowing. This is what most often shuts the pass with little warning.

When to go, season by season

  • Spring (Mar–May): Winter lingers on the pass. Wet spring storms can still turn to snow and ice above 5,000 ft (1,500 m). Check the pass status before you climb and leave slush and runoff plenty of room.
  • Summer (Jun–Aug): Best driving season. Warm, dry, long daylight. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms and brief downpours near the summit, plus heavier traffic on summer weekends.
  • Fall (Sep–Nov): Conditions turn quickly. Early snow can reach the pass by October and the first black ice shows up on cold mornings. Carry a warm layer and try to be over the summit before dusk.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): The pass is at its most dangerous. Snow squalls, black ice, and blowing snow can close I-90 with little warning, and cold snaps can drop below 0 °F (−18 °C). Travel midday between fronts, carry chains and winter tires, and wait out any storm rather than pushing over.
