What to watch for on this route
In the planner, TripCaptain highlights forecast weather risks between Denver, CO and Aspen, CO and summarizes the analysis with a Hazard Score™ from 0 to 100. A higher score indicates lower forecast risk, without guaranteeing road conditions.
- Heavy mountain snow: I-70 climbs above 10,000 ft (3,000 m) through the high country, where a winter storm can drop a foot (30 cm) of snow in hours and trigger posted traction laws. Check whether the road is open before you leave.
- Black ice: Shaded canyon stretches and pre-dawn cold hold black ice long after a storm clears, especially when temperatures sit near 23 °F (−5 °C). It's hardest to see at first light.
- Glenwood Canyon rockfall & mudslide: Between Gypsum and Glenwood Springs, I-70 threads a narrow canyon along the Colorado River. Heavy rain and spring melt can send rockfall and mudslides across the lanes and close the road with no quick detour.
- Winter pass closures: Independence Pass on CO-82 closes every winter, leaving the longer I-70 route as the only way in — and I-70 can still shut for avalanche control or crashes. Know before you leave whether the pass is open.
When to go, season by season
- Spring (Mar–May): Still winter up high early on, with heavy spring storms possible into April. Independence Pass stays closed until about late May, so plan the I-70 route and watch for rockfall and mudslides as the snow melts.
- Summer (Jun–Aug): The most reliable season. Leave in the morning to stay ahead of afternoon thunderstorms, which can trigger mudslides in Glenwood Canyon. Independence Pass is usually open.
- Fall (Sep–Nov): Good conditions early, but the first heavy snow can arrive at elevation. Independence Pass typically closes in early November — check its status before you rely on it.
- Winter (Dec–Feb): Heavy snow, black ice, and posted traction laws on I-70; Independence Pass is closed. Take the I-70 route, carry winter tires or chains, and leave mid-morning after the plows have run.
