What to watch for on this route

In the planner, TripCaptain highlights forecast weather risks between Vancouver, BC and Kamloops, BC and summarizes the analysis with a Hazard Score™ from 0 to 100. A higher score indicates lower forecast risk, without guaranteeing road conditions.

  • Heavy snow at the summit: The summit above 1,200 m (4,000 ft) can take heavy snowfall from October through April, with drifting that cuts visibility and packs the lanes faster than plows clear them.
  • Black ice on the descents: Long grades on both sides of the pass hold black ice at dawn and after dusk, especially where meltwater refreezes below −5 °C (23 °F).
  • Avalanche & crash closures: Slide paths and multi-vehicle crashes can shut the highway with no marked detour; the official pass status decides whether the road is open before you commit to the climb.
  • Summer wildfire smoke: From July into September, regional wildfires can drop visibility below 400 m (¼ mile) and push valley air quality into unhealthy ranges on the approaches.

When to go, season by season

  • Spring (Mar–May): Pavement clears at lower elevations, but the winter-tire and chain law runs through April 30 and wet spring snow still buries the summit. Leave mid-morning once overnight ice has lifted, and confirm the pass is open before the climb.
  • Summer (Jun–Aug): The easiest season for road conditions. Watch for wildfire smoke and heat haze from July into September — drive early and reassess if smoke drops visibility on the valley approaches.
  • Fall (Sep–Nov): The first heavy snow can hit the summit by late October, and winter tires or chains are required from October 1. Aim to cross before dark, when temperatures fall back below freezing.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Highest risk. Snow, black ice, and avalanche or crash closures are routine. Carry chains, leave mid-morning after plows and sanders have run, and wait out an active storm rather than starting the climb.
